About the Compression Spring Calculator

The Springulator(R) features four different types of compression spring calculators, which check spring stress and provide spring design information. With only a few required fields of input, the Springulator lets you check:

  • Dimensional Compression Spring

Compression Spring Calculations & Stress Check

The Springulator is able to generate a variety of data to assist with the design of your compression spring. Depending on your spring type, enter the load or rate information plus the total coils (Nt), the free length (L), the wire diameter (d) and the mean diameter (D) to calculate data including your compression springs:

By selecting your material type, the Springulator compression spring calculator is also able to check your design to see if it falls within allowable stress limitations. Click the button and a stress chart will be generated that shows the acceptable stress limitations, and pinpoints the stress at different load heights, as applicable to the type of compression spring you are calculating.

Compression Spring Direction of Wind

If your compression spring "screws" into another mating part, it is important to consider the direction of the spring's wind. Compression springs can be left wound or right wound. To determine a compression spring's direction of wind simply hold the spring in your hand with your fingers placed around the outside of the body and your thumb pointing straight up. If the last coil ends in the same direction that your fingers are pointing, that is the hand (direction of wind) of the spring. Read more on wind direction of a compression spring.
